Just Moved? 4 Tips on Getting to Know Your New City
Whether you’re moving across the country or across the state, settling into a new city can be both exciting and stressful. Acclimating to a new city takes time, however there are some things you can do to speed up the process of settling in.
Say “Yes” to new opportunities
You are not going to get to know your new city by staying cooped up at home! The quickest way to feel at home in a new place is by being open to new people and new experiences. Try to participate in as many opportunities as possible. Consider attending a neighborhood karaoke night or go see a band play at a local bar. Saying “yes” is an easy way to expand your network while figuring out what you enjoy about your new city. Don’t forget to wear your mask though!
Take the time to explore the city!
Take a break from unpacking and decorating your new place to walk to a nearby coffee shop, or pop into a local bakery. Make a point to find a nearby grocery store, pharmacy, gas station, and a quick place to grab a bite. Don’t be afraid to venture out on your own. This will make it easier to find what suits you without the influence of others. Every city has hidden gems, and the possibilities on what you may find are endless. The hole-in-the-wall coffee shop you stumble upon might become your new go-to!
Consider your transportation options
The best form of transportation varies by city and person. If you recently moved to a large metropolitan area, the subway or tram is often the preferred mode of transportation for many big-city residents. But, public transportation can be tricky for first-time users. Figuring out the fastest routes and times for travel usually comes with a lot of trial and error. If travel by car is convenient where you live, it is smart to learn the roads and traffic patterns to ensure you make it to places on time!
