More Than a House: What I’ve Learned Raising Three Kids in Birmingham

As a mom of three and a loan officer, I’ve had the privilege of helping many families buy homes throughout Birmingham and the surrounding communities. Over the years, I’ve learned that while every family’s story is different, most are looking for the same thing: a place where they can build a life together.

When families start shopping for a home, it’s easy to focus on square footage, granite countertops, and open floor plans. Those things are certainly nice to have, but I’ve found that the happiest homeowners are often the ones who focus first on how a home fits their family’s lifestyle and budget.

That’s where having the right team can make all the difference.

One of the first conversations I have with buyers isn’t about interest rates… it’s about goals. Are you hoping to be close to a particular school? Do you want a neighborhood where your children can ride bikes and play with friends? Are you looking for room to grow, or are you trying to simplify and spend more time together as a family?

These questions matter because buying a home is about much more than a monthly payment.

At the same time, the financial side of homeownership is important. As parents, we’re balancing a lot: sports fees, school expenses, college savings, family vacations, and everyday life. That’s why understanding your budget before you start shopping can help eliminate stress and make the process much more enjoyable.

Many buyers are surprised to learn that they may have more options than they realize. A good loan officer can help you understand different loan programs, down payment options, monthly payment scenarios, and strategies that fit your family’s unique financial picture.

My goal is never to convince someone to buy the most expensive home they can qualify for. Instead, I want families to feel confident that they’re purchasing a home they can comfortably afford while still enjoying the things that matter most to them.

One of the reasons I love Birmingham is that there are so many wonderful communities for families. Whether you’re drawn to the walkability of Homewood, the schools in Vestavia Hills, the growth in Trussville, the amenities in Hoover, or the extra space you may find in Chelsea, there truly is a neighborhood for every stage of life.

And while every home is different, the memories families create tend to be surprisingly similar.

They’re made around kitchen tables.
In backyards.
At soccer games and dance recitals.
During neighborhood gatherings and holiday traditions.

Years from now, your children won’t remember the interest rate on the mortgage, sales price, or the exact square footage of the house. They’ll remember the life your family built there. As a loan officer (and as a mom) that’s one of my favorite parts of helping families through the homebuying process.

If you’re considering buying a home in Birmingham, I’d love to help you understand your options, answer your questions, and create a budget that works for your family’s goals.
