14 Years Running: Why Real Estate Remains America’s Favorite Long-Term Investment

With so many ways to invest your money – stocks, bonds, gold, retirement accounts, and savings – you might be surprised to learn which one Americans trust the most.

For the 14th consecutive year, the answer is real estate.

That’s not just a passing trend. Through economic ups and downs, changing interest rates, and shifting housing markets, Americans have consistently viewed homeownership as the best long-term investment. And recent research shows confidence in owning a home is actually growing.

Why Homeownership Continues to Stand Out

Each year, Gallup asks Americans what they believe is the best long-term investment. Once again, real estate earned the top spot—outperforming stocks, gold, and other traditional investment options.

That speaks to something homeowners have experienced for generations: buying a home is about much more than having a place to live. It’s one of the most reliable ways to build long-term wealth.

As you make mortgage payments, you build equity while your home’s value has the potential to appreciate over time. Unlike rent, those monthly payments are helping build an asset you own.

While headlines sometimes focus on short-term shifts in home prices, it’s important to keep the bigger picture in mind. Nationally, home values have risen significantly over the past several years, and although some local markets have seen modest adjustments, real estate has historically rewarded buyers who take a long-term approach.

More Americans Believe Buying Is Better Than Renting

Recent research from Bank of America also shows growing confidence in homeownership.

For the first time since 2023, more than half of Americans (53%) say buying a home is a better choice than renting or living with family.

The survey also found:

  • 90% believe a home is a valuable investment, up from 79% the previous year.
  • 94% say homeownership provides stability, compared to 83% just one year earlier.

Those are significant increases and reflect what many families already know: owning a home offers benefits that extend well beyond financial returns.

A Home Is More Than an Investment

While building equity is certainly important, the value of homeownership isn’t measured only in dollars.

A home gives you a place to put down roots, raise a family, celebrate milestones, and create lasting memories. It provides stability, a sense of community, and the freedom to make a space truly your own.

That’s something no investment portfolio can offer.
