The Top 5 High Schools in Alabama



It’s no secret that proximity to the best schools plays a large role in deciding where to buy a house, especially for young and expanding families, but just how important is it?

One survey showed that 91% of people said school district boundaries were important in their search for a home. If you’re looking to be located near one of the top schools, then check out the top five high schools in Alabama based on the 2019 U.S. News Best High Schools rankings.

#5 Bob Jones High School

Bob Jones is located in Madison, Alabama and houses grades 9-12 with 1,778 students total. Of those 1,778 students, 66% of them take AP classes. 38% of their student body represent a minority. Bob Jones is 1 of 2 high schools in the city of Madison and is ranked #2 in the Huntsville Metro Area.

#4 Homewood High School

Homewood High School is located in Homewood, AL right outside of Birmingham. There is a 14:1 student-teacher ratio with 1,175 students. 62% of their students participate in AP classes and of that 62%, 49% of them pass at least one of their AP exams. U.S. News ranked Homewood #499 in the nation and #2 in the Birmingham Metro Area.

#3 New Century Tech Demo High School

New Century Tech Demo High School is located in Huntsville, Alabama. 99% of students participate in AP classes and 54% of the student body represents a minority. New Century is 1 of 6 high schools in the city of Huntsville and is ranked #1 in the city. U.S. News ranked New Century, a Magnet School, #294 nationally.

#2 Mountain Brook High School

Mt. Brook High School is located in Mountain Brook, Alabama and U.S. News ranked them #213 in the Nation.  At Mt. Brook, faculty encourage students to take Advanced Placement courses and exams. These exams are helpful because they allow students to comp classes in college. 61% of their students participate in Advanced Placement classes. Mt. Brook High School is the only high school in the Mountain Brook City area.

#1 Loveless Academic Magnet Program High School

Loveless Academic Magnet Program High School or LAMP for short is located in Montgomery, AL and as the name suggests, is a Magnet school. While LAMP is still a public school, its student body is not designated by location but rather by a set of criteria that a student must meet. LAMP places great emphasis on parent involvement and offers both the International Baccalaureate program as well as a number of Advanced Placement (AP) classes. While being a largely academically focused school, LAMP has no shortage of sports, arts, and language activities for students to be a part in as LAMP prides itself on creating well-rounded individuals. U.S. News ranked LAMP #13 in the Nation.
